The Patients' Academy for Research Advocacy President & CEO
Susan Schaeffer founded The Patients’ Academy for Research Advocacy in 2018 to help build a community of patients and carers who are better able to influence medical research to be patient-centered, relevant and useful. Through education about the processes and stakeholders involved in researching and developing new treatments, the non-profit organization aims to increase the patient community’s capacity to engage in medical research -- from program selection to study design and implementation -- resulting in development programs and medical products that better meet patients’ needs.
The initiative builds upon Susan’s 15-year career analyzing the biopharmaceutical sector, most recently as the chief editor of the biopharmaceutical industry journal BioCentury during 2012-2018. She was previously senior editor in charge of Product Discovery & Development coverage from 2010 through 2012, and managing editor of BioCentury and BioCentury Extra from 2004 through 2010.
As head editor, Susan advanced new thinking in clinical development, regulation, pricing and market access to speed innovations to patients. She made patient-centered R&D a key editorial theme, and took the position in BioCentury’s pages that patients can and should show the way when it comes time to translate great science into medicines that they really want and society will pay for.
She educated BioCentury analysts initially unfamiliar with drug development, enabling them to attained the expert knowledge of R&D, regulation and drug reimbursement necessary to provide thought leadership to an audience of industry, investors and regulators.
Susan’s work has been cited in regulatory filings and has influenced global biopharmaceutical companies to begin working on pricing experiments that can improve access to healthcare innovation. She is a frequent speaker at private and public meetings, including the annual BIO International Convention, The Leaders in Global Health and Technology (LIGHT) Forum, the rEVOLUTION Symposium for CSOs, and the Milken Institute’s Future of Health Summit.
